It is possible to build an open or lidded compost bin yourself by reusing existing materials. Here are some simple pointers for building a dual chamber compost bin.
Tools and materials
· Timber – planks for sides, studs for corner posts
· Bricks or stones to lay down under the corners
· Chicken wire with a tiny hole size in the case there is a danger of rodents
· Hinges – if you plan on building a lidded compost bin
· Hammer or an electric drill
· Nails or wood screws
· Saw
· Measuring tape
· Pencil
Construction
Our compost bin is made up of a long backside and five smaller walls of the same size used as sides, front, and divider. The size of the bin should be 1.2×1.2×1.2 metres or larger. It should not be any smaller, because a smaller bin may not provide sufficient support for composting activity.

The build can be strengthened by attaching a horizontal plank to the bin’s upper plank.
Before you begin, consider how you want to open the chambers’ front sides in the future in order to get to the compost for harvesting or turning. Some possibilities:
· removal of lower planks or the entire front side if fastened with screws
· eyescrews and nails as locking bolts
· front attached to hinges
We recommend building a lid if you have to protect the bin from the birds and animals.
Stages
- Measure the planks
- Build the side panels – five walls of the same size (we recommend 1.2×1.2 metres) and one long backside (2.4×1.2 metres).
- Lay the bricks down where the corner posts will be
- Fasten together the long backside, side walls and the divider. It makes work easier if you can use corner braces.
- Fasten the front pieces, considering how you want to open them in the future.
